Budget & Unlocked Smartphones: Pixel 9a, Galaxy A36 and Buying Checks

Check exact model compatibility, software support, condition and total ownership cost before buying a budget unlocked smartphone.

An unlocked phone lets you choose a compatible carrier without first removing a SIM lock. It does not guarantee that every network feature will work. For a $200–$500 purchase, check the exact model, carrier acceptance, remaining updates, condition and total cost before comparing headline specifications.

For the policy details, read unlocked vs. carrier phones. For a used alternative, start with the refurbished buying checklist.

Two documented choices within a $200–$500 budget

The US Google Store lists Pixel 9a from $499; Samsung lists the 128 GB unlocked Galaxy A36 5G at $399.99. These are US reference prices before tax. Check the current offer and stock before ordering. Compare a retailer’s current price and exact variant before ordering. Google specifications, Samsung unlocked listing.

Choice Official hardware and support Practical trade-off
Google Pixel 9a Tensor G4; 6.3-inch 60–120 Hz display; 48 MP main and 13 MP ultrawide; seven years of OS/security/Pixel Drop updates from first availability Smaller display and stronger measured CPU results in the tests below
Samsung Galaxy A36 5G 6.7-inch 120 Hz AMOLED; six generations of OS upgrades and six years of security updates from launch Larger screen and lower reference price

Original review measurements

PhoneArena reports the following results in its Pixel 9a review updated May 29, 2025 and Galaxy A36 review updated August 11, 2025. These are its review-unit measurements using Geekbench 6 and 3DMark Wild Life Extreme, with higher scores better. Compare results within each named benchmark; firmware, temperature and run-to-run variation can affect scores.

PhoneArena test Pixel 9a Galaxy A36 5G
Geekbench 6 single-core 1,687 1,019
Geekbench 6 multi-core 4,385 2,915
3DMark Extreme high / low 2,625 / 2,124 914 / 909

Original testing sources: Pixel 9a review, Galaxy A36 review and PhoneArena methodology. These measurements favor the Pixel for CPU/GPU headroom in the tested workloads.

Camera samples and the buying decision

Use the original Pixel 9a camera section and sample footage and Galaxy A36 main, ultrawide and 2× sample gallery. PhoneArena describes the Pixel’s color handling positively but notes some oversharpening and lifted shadows; it reports warmer, more processed A36 stills and weaker ultrawide results. The linked reviews show the scenes behind those assessments.

At comparable condition and availability, the Pixel is the stronger candidate for buyers prioritizing the measured performance and the cited camera results. The A36 suits a buyer prioritizing its bigger display and a roughly $100 lower reference price. Inspect the linked full-size samples for the subjects you photograph, then weigh that against the actual delivered price and remaining support.

Check the actual model, then the network

The same product family can include regional or carrier variants. Ask the seller for the full model number and verify it against the manufacturer’s specification page for that country. A listing that says only “global unlocked” is insufficient to establish US compatibility.

Check Evidence to request Buying decision
SIM lock Unlock status and original carrier A promise to unlock later adds risk.
Radio support Exact model’s LTE and 5G band list Compare it with the intended carrier’s network.
Activation Carrier BYOD result for the actual IMEI Confirm voice, data, Wi-Fi Calling and eSIM separately.
Updates Manufacturer’s support end date Count remaining support from now, not from your purchase date.
Condition Battery, repair and return terms Compare with the cost of a new phone.

An FCC ID equipment authorization can help identify certified radio hardware. It is not a carrier activation approval or a guarantee of coverage at your address. The FCC unlocking guide likewise distinguishes unlocking from compatibility.

T-Mobile’s network reference lists n71 at 600 MHz for Extended Range and n41 at 2.5 GHz among Ultra Capacity bands. Check all relevant bands rather than accepting a generic “5G” label. See 5G UW and UC explained for the practical limits of those labels.

Test calls as well as data

A phone that browses the web is not automatically ready for all calling features. Before the return deadline, activate your intended plan, place and receive a normal call, send a text and use data away from Wi-Fi. Do not place test calls to emergency numbers. If calls fail, ask the carrier to check provisioning and model eligibility before changing hidden modem settings.

A successful data connection does not replace separate voice and messaging checks.

Compare ownership cost over the same period

Use: phone payments + service + fees + expected repairs − credits actually received. Include any unpaid handset balance at the comparison date. A 36-month promotion evaluated after 24 months still has a remaining obligation; a monthly bill alone hides it. Read the offer’s trade-in, plan-change, payoff and cancellation rules because credit conditions differ.

Enter the delivered handset price and the full service charge from your quotes. Compare both offers over the same ownership period, including the balance still payable if you leave early.

Include remaining handset debt when comparing a financed offer with an outright purchase.

Choose the trade-off that matters to you

For camera use, compare full-size samples of moving subjects and low-light scenes from the exact model; megapixels alone do not show motion blur or processing quality. For games, compare sustained performance and heat under the same test settings, not isolated peak scores. For everyday use, prioritize readable display brightness, sufficient storage and the remaining security-support period.

Google’s Pixel update policy counts support from first availability in the US Google Store. That makes an older discounted model a different proposition from a newly released phone at the same price. Check its end date before committing to several years of ownership.

Keep the order confirmation, full model number and written return conditions. Do not publish your IMEI in forums. If travel matters, check the model’s eSIM and physical SIM options before purchase.
