Refurbished Phone Buying Guides: Grading Tiers, Battery Health & Parts Audits

Choose a refurbished phone by its written condition, battery and return terms. “Grade A”, “Excellent” and “refurbished” are not interchangeable promises across sellers. Save the listing so you can compare what arrives with what you ordered.

Do not infer remaining battery life from a seller’s cosmetic grade. A clean shell and a worn battery can coexist.

Battery health is one observation

Apple’s battery guidance distinguishes charge capacity from the ability to supply peak power. Age, use and temperature affect performance. A displayed percentage does not establish how many months remain before service, and 80% is not a universal physical cliff.

Record any battery service warning, maximum-capacity reading and unexpected shutdown. Where Android provides no equivalent percentage, ask which diagnostic the seller used; an estimated value from an app is not automatically comparable to an iPhone reading. Judge the phone against the promised threshold and its behavior during your normal use.

Identify repair and activation concerns

On supported iPhones with iOS 15.2 or later, open Settings → General → About and inspect Parts and Service History. The parts shown depend on the model. Genuine records genuine Apple parts and processes; Used identifies a previously used part; Unknown can indicate a nongenuine, incomplete or malfunctioning repair. A missing history section does not certify every component as untouched.

Test touch across the screen, brightness, cameras, microphone, speaker, buttons and charging. True Tone availability alone cannot authenticate a display. If a warning conflicts with the seller’s promise, document it and use the seller’s return process.

Complete setup without the previous owner’s account or unexpected organization enrollment. A matching IMEI identifies the handset; it does not prove clean financial standing. Ask the intended carrier to check activation eligibility and verify the SIM lock separately.

Check seals without putting the phone in water

Apple states that water resistance is not permanent and its limited warranty excludes liquid damage. Do not immerse a used phone to test its advertised IP rating. If a seller claims a post-repair pressure test, request a dated result for that unit and the written coverage it provides. A phone app or a visual seam inspection cannot establish a laboratory ingress rating.

Amazon’s US Renewed policy requires removal of previous user data and references NIST media-sanitization guidance. That seller obligation is separate from the buyer’s ability to finish setup. A factory-reset screen alone does not prove a particular sanitization method was executed correctly.

Keep evidence while returns are available

Photograph delivery damage and condition, preserve the listing and record the IMEI privately. Test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ordinary calls and charging with suitable accessories. Compare the delivered condition with the seller’s own grade; Amazon’s 12-inch rule applies to its specified program and category, not every refurbished phone. Contact the seller promptly for a mismatch, retaining the order and diagnostic details.
