Well the title says it all, a comparison of the camera ability between my Nokia E7 running Symbian Belle OS and the new Nokia 701 also running Symbian Belle OS. This is not intended to be a debate on AF vs EDoF, this is just to see if there are any improvements to the camera in the new Belle devices now available.
First up I took a few images in the early morning (in low light) of the sunrise
Now here are some low light HDR captures
Here is a landscape shot on what turned out to be quite a gloomy day, the weather gods were against me.
Here are the HDR versions of the same image, fused with identical settings.
So far so good, and my views are mixed, when it comes to the HDR versions I think I prefer the Nokia E7, but the Nokia 701 for the standard images. Having said that there is not that much in it, the colours certainly look deeper in the Nokia 701 standard images.
Now we all know EDoF cannot do close-ups (macros) but lets see how reasonable the images are.
Well to my eyes, the Nokia 701 seems to be the clear winner, not that I am saying the image is clear and not blurry to some extent. We all know these camera’s cannot do this sort of thing. Just trying to identify which does it better. Of course feel free to disagree and complain about it being EDoF etc etc.
Finally some night shots, no external light source, it was pitch black outsde and approximately 3 to 4 metres from the bush/tree. Images were taken in “auto mode”
So just for a comparison, here is the same image, this time using the Nokia N8 with it’s Xenon flash instead of dual LED
For obvious reasons the N8 is better, I just threw it in for comparison sake. Out of the other two the flash in the Nokia 701 seems to perform a little better.
All in all I think the Nokia 701 performs better all round. Colours appear to be deeper, images perhaps a little darker. It seems to be able to get closer to objects too, still not macro I know, and the dual LED flash has a slightly better performance.
